Impending Doom

Nailed. Dead. Risen. - Facedown Records

I was at a complete loss over what to say about this band. Grindy death-metal has never really been a favourite genre of mine. To be completely realistic, it’s safer to say that I’ve never really liked it. The songs just seem to drag on, regardless of who’s playing what. A band can be instrumentally talented, but it just doesn’t seem to matter when everything begins to sound the same. This seems to hold true to this bands music; it seems to lack any sort of rhythm (albeit it does have structure) and never really picks up. I suppose if you’re into that sort of thing, that’s good news for you, but for any others that enjoy melody or faster paced music, this band will cause you pain and displeasure.

The biggest contrast in this music is the content of the lyrics which are incoherently growled. This genre is usually left to bands willing to write songs about morbid topics or those geared towards the praise of evil deities, it is far from common place to read about salvation through religion in the liner notes. One should remember that this band doesn’t really get preachy because they’re impossible to understand (although I guarantee that had they been coherent, the words this man is speaking would be extremely preachy). Every song happens to have identical vocal style, distorted and growled. Not to mention, musically, the tracks all begin to blend together as well. This band is completely driven by the rhythm section, dropped guitar tuning, palm muted riffs and double kick beats dominate every song to the point where riffs and patterns could be interchangeable and not really affect the song.

This cd was really quite painful to listen to, I’m just not big on metal, and I simply don’t like grind-anything (grindcore, grind-metal, etc.). Sure, my expectations for this album weren’t all that high to begin with, it was most likely because a sticker on the sleeve of this album said “For Fans Of:” and Cannibal Corpse happened to be one of the three that followed. The names of the other two bands are eluding me at the moment, but I can be certain that they’re most likely somehow reminiscent of the aforementioned band. This brings me to my next point, I don’t like Cannibal Corpse, I’ve only heard a song or two, so I don’t have a completely clear picture of what they sound like, but if it’s anything like this, I’m going to be sure to stay away. Which is what I recommend to you, the patrons of this site, if you follow its namesake and tend to keep to one of the many genres encompassed by the label of “punk” you will most likely be disappointed with this band. This is metal, and there songs will stop the pace set by anything you may have been listening to beforehand. If you’re not daunted by some grind metal, then by all means, pick this album up. I have no idea how to predict the reaction this will cause, it will most likely be labelled “gay” or “faggot music” (due to its religious content)by this very accepting music scene we happen to be a part of. But I digress, I’m just going to end this now before I begin to reiterate and become more redundant than I have already. Good day!
