If You Speak Any Faster - Victory Records
Victory Records is a perfect example of a hit and miss record label. While they have some humongous hits that go on to be the most talked about albums of the year, they have some albums that are released, heard once and then never talked about again. So really, it’s hard to guess what you’ll get from the Chicago based label when they announce a new signing or album. But after hearing a few songs from June, I knew I had to hear more and If You Speak Any Faster helped me hear more.
It’s not that If You Speak Any Faster is anything remotely ground break or like that, in fact, its probably an album you’ve heard a million times before. But they do it in a way that is still refreshing and no where near obnoxious. It isn’t a rip off or wanna be anything, it is just simple pop-rock with a tinge of emo sprinkled on the side that is fun to listen to. It’s nice to hear a solid pop-punk album coming from the shelves ofVictory that isn’t bombarded with screams and yelps of pain. Songs like Scandals And Scoundrels and I’ve Got The Time If You Have The Argument show sparks of a more easily accessibleTaking Back Sunday style of dueling vocals while at other times, the vocals sound more poppish and almost like Motion City Soundtrack.
June make be yelled at for sounding the same as countless other bands, but that still doesn’t take away from the fact that they have found a sound that is actually enjoyable. It’s poppy, upbeat, and catchy without being whiny or annoying. It doesn’t get boring and none of the songs yell at you to press skip. It flows nicely and is just a good, fun album.
If you’ve seen the album artwork, then I’m sure you’re wondering what’s behind the thick wooden doors. So take a look and open them, I’m sure you’ll like what’s behind them.
