Kid You Not

Here's To Feeling' Good All The Time - Sell The Heart Records

So, this is Kid You Not’s four full length and ‘I kid you not’, I have maybe only ever heard one of their previous albums in passing, so here is my attempt at righting some wrongs here.

Being an emotionally charged punk band from Florida is I’m imagining not an easy thing to get across, as there is only one band comes to mind when you say Florida and Punk in the same breath, Against Me fronted by Laura Jane Grace, is an act that can not be repeated or bettered I’d personally say, but Kid You Not have gone a step to the side when it comes to there sound and punk mantra, its much more of the melodic emo than the angst filled political and introspective of AM, or at least this is what I took from first listen, but after that quick skim and delving deeper into each song, what you actually get is songs like ‘First Of A Dying Breed’ or ‘The Longer It Isn’t Us, The More It Will Happen’ which have all the familiar traits of said Florida band AM, tonnes of angst, as much emotion and yes those familiar hooks that have you dragged in and singing right back at them too.

What Kid You Not do a little differently, and the reason I said they have taken a step to the side from other bands of this genre, is yes its punk, yes it melodic, but its also positive emo (if there is such a thing).  ‘Sounded Like A Good Idea At The Time’ for example, takes all the shit thrown at you, and throws it all straight back, which spins the idea of being down and defeated by life’s trials on its head, says fuck you i’ll be good anyway thanks.  But then just to make you feel all at home as a fan of the morose, they do throw in ‘Midlife Crisis Actor’ a true downer of a song, yet does this actually fit the album, slightly odd but then just shows they care I guess (and if I’m making any sense here, your a better psycho analyst than me I guess), but what truly matters, is this album does a little more than it says on the tin and when you lift the lid, it also has sum substance.

Signing off whilst I’m just about making any sense what so ever, that’s what this album did to me.  A little confusing, but very powerful and most definitely for all the angry anxiety filled of you out there!, maybe after several more listens and in a different frame of being, I might get it (clever stuff does that to me), but never the less, it’s awash with banging tunes.

The album dropped on Oct 14th via Sell The Heart Records
