#Punk#Zombie#RocknRoll - Self Released
Vancouver punk rock outfit Kill Matilda might just be the first band ever to name an album using Titter ‘hashtag’ slang. But aside from inciting my inner anger and fueling an accompanying rant about how closed-minded and how unable I am to accept the hashtag revolution plaguing my Facebook and social media accounts, the band’s latest EP, #Punk#Zombie#RocknRoll is also worth noting on its merit as an aggressive dose of punk rock. Landing somewhere between the hardnosed style of The Distillers and hook heavy hometown hero Bif Naked, the trio offer fans of female fronted rock n roll five solid reasons to get to know Kill Matilda.
Opening with the ominous crunch of a sluggish bass groove, “Pomegranate” crushes down with distorted guitars and sweltering solos. Put simply, the band sounds dangerous – even deadly – as they unleash their sharp hooks and rock n’ roll aggression in each attitude fueled verse. Front woman Dusty Exner can belt with the best of them when she really lets loose, tearing up her vocal chords as she unleashes the beast inside like in “I Want Revenge.” While her boisterous personality can get exhausting by the time “Law Abiding Citizen” hits (this isn’t an EP I’d recommend listening to on repeat), the inclusion of the acoustic number “Geisha With A Switch Blade” offers listeners a welcome distraction before Kill Matilda closes out the disc on another blinding high with “PBJ.” Kill Matilda certainly has a classically ragged punk attitude and style, in-your-face flaws and all.
#Punk#Zombie#RocknRoll is the type of whirlwind EP that showcases a band clearly made for the stage. While the energy might be a bit much for listeners without taking a break from their iPods, when played in a live setting Kill Matilda’s latest offering sounds to leave listeners sweaty and satisfied – an ironic suggestion considering the very “digital age” namesake of #Punk#Zombie#RocknRoll.
