Knola

To The Rhythm - Skeletal Lightning Records

Knola describe themselves as a collective of friends who make and play music together, no mean feat when their members are spread across Washington, Michigan and Kentucky. To The Rhythm is the follow up to 2015’s The Black Beach EP and this is their debut full length release.

Knola make a minimalist discordant indie noise which features vocals that are an omnipresent mournful wail. They are clearly experimental, for example the album takes a break for two minutes of white noise on Earth Noise, why it does this I have no idea but I guess the band have their reasons. This is a band that certainly have their own sound, but bands who are singular and individual are never going to be to everyone’s taste. After giving this a few listens I really think that this is the kind of band you will either love or hate.

For me To The Rhythm just becomes a dissonant jarring affair that I just can’t warm to, maybe it’s just that this isn’t my thing but I couldn’t find any redeeming features in To The Rhythm, having said that I do admire people who are willing to follow their own path so I wish them well, but this is one of those releases that just wasn’t for me.
