At Your Service - The Saturday Team
Melody Club’s album At Your Service is the perfect discothek soundtrack. Playing dance beats, poppy guitar melodies and an infectious synth, this band plays club rock you don’t need ecstasy to enjoy.
Sounding like a B side to AFI’s Decemberunderground, “Take Me Away” is filled with euphoria and a strong 80s influence. While this song would sound better with Davey Havok’s range, it is still executed well by singer Kristofer Östergren’s vocal skills. Upbeat and catchy, “Baby” is a great dance track. After five songs of constant disco beats, At Your Service becomes old. Fortunately, “Cats” becomes a breath of fresh air on the album. The synth is soft and compliments the bass line while the drums are more relaxed. “Breakaway” also strays from the other electronic inspired tracks. With distorted guitars and a straight up rock edge, this is the best song.
Even though the high points of At Your Service are fantastic, the low points are hard to listen to. The premise of “Killing A Boy” sounds like the worst melodrama to occur in middle school and oozes with the cheesiness of a girl breaking a boy’s heart. Apparently, what the boy and girl shared was great until the girl felt the need to “Break it (them)/ Break it/ And Break it apart.” “Stranded Love” on the other hand sounds like the perfect Cher song. Enough said.
While 80% of At Your Service is amazing, the other 20% doesn’t completely ruin the album. Because the content of most of the songs is generally happy and bright, this is definitely an album you need to be in the mood to listen to. It’ll be interesting to see if this Swedish band makes it big in the States.
