Modern Life Is War

Witness - Deathwish Inc.

I’m having trouble finding words to describe how this CD will probably sit idle for a very long time once I’m done writing this. It’s not that it’s really that bad, it’s just that I can of hundreds of other bands I’d rather be listening to. All the songs have a chuggy black-metal feel to them, even though they sound nothing like black-metal, they just provide the feeling. The vocalist reminds me of Rise Against, just less melodic. The guitar is like I said, chuggy and simple. Each song sounds like one prolonged outro for the entirety of each song due to crappy riffs. The drummer doesn’t sound that bad, I think I heard double kick, but there’s nothing to fancy here. I just really dislike the vocals; they ruined all of the songs. Due to the fact that those vocals are usually the focus of a band, listening to this really was not worth my time. The album didn’t even arouse any other emotions in me besides boredom. Changing the song didn’t help either, probably because every song sounded the same. I hate to say it, but I couldn’t even finish every song. Even right now, since I wrote this review during school, I’m just reading what I wrote and re-copying. This makes my life easier because instead of listening to this CD again and going through unbearable boredom I get to listen to Warzone, which unlike Modern Life Is War, is good and an actual hardcore band. But I digress.

Please, for the sake of doing something better with your money, don’t buy this. I really expected much better from Deathwish records. They have released some albums in the past that completely astonished me. So instead of buying Modern Life is War, buy Cast Aside, or Blacklisted, or Death Before Dishonor first. I accidentally chanced upon something saying this is one of the top bands to look out for from 2005. But since that was out of AP Magazine, it really has no credibility. Now excuse me while I rant about AP. Two or three times now I’ve opened an AP magazine, I’ve read some articles, and then I realized that the entire book is just advertising/bullshit. There aren’t even interesting ad’s, it’s 90% poppy mainstream bands (I saw a bunch of From First To Last and Atreyu propaganda) that only 14 yr old trend whores like. Then it donned on me that 90% of the readers are 14 yr old trend whores. So I guess if you’re a 14 yr old trend whore, you might like this album, but by being vague with my suggestion I figure I won’t have to take responsibility for someone pissing away their money. I’d rather listen to this album a thousand times than have to read another AP magazine. So for the sake of consuming needful products, don’t buy this CD, and you probably shouldn’t buy AP either, unless you feel like being brainwashed by columns of mindless, redundant crap.
