Silent Drive

Love Is Worth It - Equal Vision Records

Releasing a debut album is always an unnerving time for bands. It’s basically a first impression into what the band has to offer to a huge market of endless directions, where a band hopes to go anywhere but down. This is especially true when members of the band already have a following due to being a member of an already existing band. Such is the case with Silent Drive, boasting members of Bane, as well as ex-members from Drowningman and Ink Cartridge Funeral. For this reason I wasn’t sure what to expect from Silent Drive, especially since I’m not a huge Bane fan. Anyone I’ve talked to about it has just written Silent Drive off as a “Bane side-project” (which technically it is) but it’s so much more. With this album you get to see the lighter side, both musically and lyrically. You could see this as a bad thing, but personally I find it quite enjoyable.

The first song grabbed me, and even now, every time I hear it I fall in love again. There’s just so much passion and energy, not to mention incredible dynamics. The rest of the album, although incredible, just doesn’t stand up to the standard set by the opening track, 4/16. As for vocal range, they definately have it. From aggressive shouting to beautiful harmonics and everything in between, each song holds something different from the last.

Lyrically this is an album you can sing along to. I never like it when I’m singing along to a song with a message I don’t agree with, no matter how much I enjoy the vocal pattern. Luckily, this album strays from swearing, strays from hard topics and tends to stay away from strong opinionated comments. The words themselves are interesting to read, even apart from the music.

All I can say is forget about Bane, forget about the thought that just because members co-exist between that and Silent Drive they will sound the same. They don’t, and personally I find that a great thing. I love this album, and am really surprised that there isn’t much buzz about them. I’m sure one day more people will catch on and Silent Drive will get the respect they deserve.
