I Found The Answers And Now I Want More - Alcopop Records

Tokky Horror are due to release this debut EP on 21st May via Alcopop Records, being a debut, it comes as no surprise to me that there is no reference point at which to listen to this.  So head first we go, into something that they themselves describe as “Virtual Hardcore” a term that comes from the reality of lockdown and the relative distance between band members, coming from Liverpool, Manchester and London, Zee Davine (Queen Zee), Ava Akira and Mollie Rush, this made it a totally virtual writing and recording experience.

If any of you have ever heard or seen Queen Zee and been blown away by the live show, well this is just as powerful, but in a very different way. With all the relevance of The Prodigy and angst of Atari Teenage Riot mixed with their very own futuristic landscape of sounds, this takes punk attitude all the way to a new place, ‘Girl Racer’ kicks off with that very thing in mind, a kind of dance hardcore that intertwines with some raw guitar riffs and powers its way straight into ‘Simulate Me’ which carries a similar beat and vocal attitude, one that is akin to a DIY band that has no time for messing about, just feeling the moment and recording it.  In contrast ‘Godliness’ feels much more considered, but at the same time has an edginess of teetering on the edge right up until it actually does fall off two thirds of the way through, the best bit! Raw and honest.

‘Eden On Acid’ is exactly that, angst ridden noise that’s only just about contained.  Then you get to the final track ‘Sleeper’ a more pure electronica sound that drops a great sample in the form of the ageless ‘Sabotage’ intro, and does feel like it has just come out of the clubs.

Is this for the purist Punk, probably not, is this for the non purist music junkie, Yes!   Out on the rim with an eye on the void that lies beyond is how I’d describe this EP, something that’s always pushing the boundaries is always welcome in my ears.

Head on over to Alcopop Records for all you Tokky Horror goodies.
