NOFX... And Out Come the Wolves Dookie - A-F Records
Excluding the 5 and a half minute closer, the songs on the ridiculously titled NOFX… and Out Come the Wolves Dookie average a minute and half. This is a refreshing injection into the current punk rock scene. Like the title implies, these are songs rooted in the past, when punk rock wasn’t afraid of approaching comedy and courting controversy. These songs are funny as hell. This isn’t an intellectual Propagandhi album full of satire, the humor here is more inspired by the potty humor variety that NOFX are well known for, although there is still an underlying positive theme that comes from the scene.
The music is rough 90s styled punk rock, a little awkward in its’ execution, but tailor made for angst ridden teens to blare loudly and piss off their parents and teachers. There are doses of 80s hardcore thrown into the mix for good measure, making this the perfect nostalgia piece for aging punks too. The song titles themselves give you a hint about what you will find inside. Americunt and Gay Jesus for President are certain to get soccer moms everywhere all fired up with self righteous anger. They rail against commercialized punk and crowd funding on Punk Rock Ruined My Life, name checking scene legends like Ian Mackaye and Tom Gabel. Their hatred of parents (Fuck You Dad; No Dads No Bastards) is custom made for angry punk kids. The repeated refrain on album lead Blackin’ In of Fuck the Man represents everything that punk seemed to mean as a teen. The slow burn of album closer, Start Today, (which may or may not be a nod to hardcore legends Gorilla Biscuits… you can never really tell when the band are being tongue in cheek) is full of useful advice like “pay your taxes” and “stay away from Chik-fil-A.” Musically they bring to mind a wide variety of bands, from the humorous hardcore of Good Clean Fun to the pissed off street punk of Star Fucking Hipsters. Their sound is all over the wide reaches of the punk genre, bringing in influences from all over the place, including a surprise horn section near the end of Punk Rock Ruined My Life.
It is hard to find anything bad to say about this group, which ironically would probably piss the band off. They work hard to be offensive. In a year of great music, this manages to stand out from the crowd. It is easy to think of listening to this on a boombox in your room back in the day, pissed off because mom grounded you and dad kicked your ass after you got in trouble with the cops.
