The Triumph - Facedown Records
55 seconds is the length of time that elapsed before this CD goes into a breakdown. 55 seconds is also the length of time it took for a mosh oriented band to leave me completely speechless with their newly re-released album. It makes me wonder if this certain offshoot of hardcore has become completely shameless and it also begs the question “will I be able to say anything even remotely insightful or original about this music?” The answer to that question is likely a resounding “no.”
About a year ago xDeathstarx released an album called We Are The Threat, it was a guilty pleasure of mine that I would listen to occasionally. It had some cool songs but I generally felt dirty after listening to it; there were numerous breakdowns, bad lyrics; you know, all the factors that make a beat-down album. The Triumph is what xDeathstarx was doing before they released We Are Threat and although it’s not much different, the sheer number of breakdowns and the predictable song writing was so great that I could barely leave it on.
This leads me to my conclusion: nobody is reinventing this style, merely beating it to death with hundreds of bands simultaneously releasing the exact same album. xDeathstarx is one of those bands and this trend is becoming painful. Perhaps I’ve moved on, maybe I’m just getting old; whatever the case may be, I wasn’t fond of this music and I don’t recommend it unless you can be quite sure you’ll enjoy it.
