Tornado Lobster Killer Reveal New Album “Lobsteria’
Milan's Tornado Lobster Killer have released Lobsteria, a record that transforms uncertainty, frustration, and personal upheaval into something urgent, honest, and cathartic. The…
In 1991, an openly gay punk band was still something of an anomaly. When Jon Ginoli and Chris Freeman formed Pansy Division in San Francisco, they weren’t trying to redefine punk rock. They were simply writing the songs they wanted to hear: fast, melodic, funny and rooted in the traditions of the Ramones, Buzzcocks, The Undertones and classic guitar pop. The difference was that their songs spoke openly about experiences rock music had almost entirely ignored. They soon found a home at Lookout! Records, becoming one of the label’s defining artists alongside Green Day, Screeching Weasel, The Mr. T Experience and Operation Ivy. At a time when the Bay Area underground was reshaping American punk, Pansy Division offered something genuinely new without ever sounding like anything other than a great punk band. Everything changed in 1994, when Green Day invited them to open the American leg of the Dookie tour. Night after night they played to thousands of people, many of whom had never seen an openly queer band before. They didn’t alter their songs, soften the jokes or dilute who they were. They simply walked on stage and played. Looking back, it’s difficult to think of another band that broadened punk’s horizons with such quiet confidence.

More than three decades later, the songs remain the best argument for the band’s enduring appeal. Albums such as Undressed, Deflowered and Wish I’d Taken Pictures still sound remarkably fresh, balancing irresistible melodies with wit, warmth and an honesty that has never felt self-conscious. Their return to Europe marks their first tour across the continent in years, and also celebrates one of the longest-running partnerships to emerge from the Lookout! Records era. Few bands from the label’s original roster are still active today. Fewer still continue to perform with the same founding partnership that started it all in the early 1990s. Jon Ginoli and Chris Freeman have remained at the heart of Pansy Division for more than three decades, a continuity that feels increasingly rare in American punk rock. Today’s line-up is completed by guitarist Joel Reader (The Mr. T Experience / The Plus Ones / The Avengers) and drummer Luis Illades (The Avengers). Together, the four-piece continues to deliver the same infectious blend of melody, humour and punk rock energy that has earned Pansy Division a devoted following far beyond the scene that first embraced them. Presented by Otis Tours, the tour will take Pansy Division across the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy this July, culminating at Italy’s Punk Rock Raduno, one of Europe’s most respected celebrations of melodic punk rock and do it yourself ethics.
