Eat This - Self Released
We live in dark times, dictators and would be tyrants seem to be gaining power, the news is a daily horror show and (at least in the UK) it never seems to stop raining. What we need in these trying times is an anti-depressant, something to to lift the spirits and get the feet moving, and like any worthwhile set of heroes, Bite Me Bambi have arrived in our hour of need when a skanking pick me up is needed. The band’s debut full length, Eat This, is set to drop on the 14th February, whether that counts as a romantic message is down to your personal preferences, but this is a much needed boost to the start of 2025.
Yes Bite Me Bambi are ska punk, but this is no Less Than Jake-alike or Mad Caddies 2.0, Bite Me Bambi have developed their own ska inspired soundtrack that takes it cues from the second and third waves of ska punk that have become a staple of the punk scene. This is underpinned as former members have played in ska & punk staples including Static Fiction, The Maxies, Suburban Legends, Starpool, My Superhero, Save Ferris and Half Past Two, and with that pedigree you know that you’re in for an all star OC ska punk showcase.
Side one track one is should always be a standout and Too Many People kicks things off in fine style with an anthem for the chaotic world we live in and the impact it can have on your mental health, it’s also a track that should see you moving as soon as the uptempo skank kicks into high gear. The dance floor friendly beat of Bad Boyfriend follows and there’s no respite as Girls Like You and Gaslighter’s Anthem swiftly follow. It’s four for four so far and my cats are by now probably traumatised after being exposed to some truly embarrassing kitchen dancing.
The half way mark sees a reworking of The Offspring’s Want You Bad, Bite Me Bambi keep the energy of the original intact but drag it onto the dancefloor. My personal highlight, in what it must be said is an album of highlights, is the superb Do The Damned, a Halloween ready single that belongs on the soundtrack to the next season of Wednesday. Like That follows with a slice of ska punk perfection before we reach the album’s finale. Eat This closes with the comparatively laid back skank of Girls Of Summer that closes out a near perfect 25 minutes.
The ska punk staples are present but they are incorporated into something that sounds fresh and energetic, with the whole package anchored by Tahlena Chikami’s stunning vocals that are equal parts seductive and venomous. If I’m going to criticise, well 8 tracks just isn’t enough, it’s all over far too quickly, and if you follow the band you will already be familiar with much of the album due to the steady drip feed of online singles, but aside from those minor gripes this is a solid ska fuelled album and an early contender for my favourite album of ’25.
Bite Me Bambi will be on tour in support of Eat This, including an appearance at the UK’s Rebellion Festival in August where I will be front and centre, rather than lurking at the back with my pint, although I might still be clutching onto my pint!
